WTS 4 - Camano Island - January 27, 2018

Description: The 4th in our 8 week Winter Training Series is one of our favorite rides! Beautiful, low traffic, and rolling route around Camano Island, including a dip down to Camano Island Park if you want. Be sure to bring some extra water and food as services on the island are limited. Note we moved to a new start location a couple of years ago!

Introduction to the Winter Training Series An introduction to the Winter Training Series, including a bit of history, how the rides are conducted and rider expectations.

Distance: 51 miles / Approx. 3250' gain

Where: Stanwood Starbucks - 27008 - 92nd Ave NW; Stanwood, WA

Directions to Start: To get to Stanwood, take I-5 north. Take Exit 212 to Hwy 532 west (towards Stanwood and Camano Island). Go approximately 5 miles. Take a right at 92nd Ave NW at stoplight then left into large parking lot.  Starbucks is on your left.

Welcome to the 2018 Winter Training Series

The 2018 Winter Training Series Returns January 6th! - Don't be left riding in the cold ...... on your own!  Starting out with short routes they gradually increase in length and/or difficulty (more elevation gain) over an eight week period.  They will be sure to get you ready for the 2018 Brevet Season!

Led again by Ralph Nussbaum with able assistance from Noel Howes and Ray Whitlock, the 20th edition of the WTS starts January 6th and will end just before the year's first official SIR Populaire (100km ride).  Co-hosted by the Cascade Bicycle Club, this is an eight ride series, with distances that vary from about 34 miles on our first ride to 100 miles on our last. For several years the weather gods hadn't been too kind to us but the last 2 years we got the full series in. Let's hope this trend holds! These rides are a great way to get in some early season training with a natural buildup of miles while enjoying the company of other riders. Winter riding is tough enough - this gives you a chance to do it with friends. You know what they say - misery loves company.

Randonneuring is self-supported long-distance cycling. It's a great sport for those who love to ride their bikes, like to explore new roads, and wonder what is over the next hill. Our rides are scenic and challenging.  Perhaps most enjoyable is the camaraderie among randonneurs. Randonneuring is not a race,  but the time limits makes it challenging nonetheless.

Randonneuring is a big tent where every rider finds his or her challenge. Some aspire to finish within the time limit, others try to set a personal best, yet others want to go as fast as possible. Some concentrate on the longest distances, others do the day rides (100, 200 and 300 km). All are randonneurs. At Seattle International Randonneurs, each rider is respected. We are all out to have fun.

Rides (called Populaires or Brevets) vary in length between 100 km (62 miles) and 1200 km (750 miles). Riders are given a route sheet, which tells them where to go. They carry a control card, which they have signed at pre-determined points to show that they have completed the course. At the end, those who complete the course within the time limits obtain a medal.
